As a nature lover, I’ve always dreamt of visiting New Zealand. To me, it’s the ultimate destination for anyone who loves pristine landscapes, vibrant colors, and raw natural beauty. Growing up, I had seen countless pictures and heard incredible stories about this magical place. In 2011, my dream began to take shape when my friend Girish and I decided to plan a trip to New Zealand during the Easter break in April 2012.
Planning the Trip
At the time, I was living in Sydney, Australia, which is just a three-hour flight to New Zealand. With the distance being so manageable, the temptation to explore this natural wonderland was irresistible. New Zealand is split into two main islands: the North Island, known for its bustling cities and business hubs, and the South Island, renowned for its untouched beauty and stunning landscapes. For us, the choice was obvious—we would explore the South Island.
We spent hours researching the best spots to visit and finalized an exciting itinerary for our adventure. Our plan was simple yet packed with breathtaking destinations:
Route:
Sydney (Australia) >> Christchurch (New Zealand) >> Greymouth (NZ) >> Fox Glaciers (NZ) >> Queenstown (NZ) >> Milford Sound (NZ) >> Queenstown (NZ) >> Christchurch (NZ) >> Sydney (Australia)
Why the South Island?
The South Island of New Zealand is often described as nature’s masterpiece. From snow-capped mountains to pristine glaciers, from vibrant fjords to peaceful lakes, the island offers unparalleled beauty at every turn. While the North Island has its charm with urban hubs like Auckland and Wellington, the South Island seemed perfect for two nature enthusiasts like us.
We knew this journey was going to be special. From the moment we booked our flights to Christchurch, the excitement began to build. The South Island promised adventure, tranquility, and a chance to immerse ourselves in some of the most picturesque landscapes on Earth.

Day 1: Christchurch – The Journey Begins
April 6th, 2012 (NZ)
After months of planning and anticipation, our New Zealand adventure officially began in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island. We landed late at night, exhausted from the journey, and checked into our accommodation, The Golden Chain – Christchurch Motel. There wasn’t much time to explore the city that night, as we had an early start the next day. Sleep was the priority as we prepared ourselves for the first major highlight of our trip.
Day 2: TranzAlpine Train Journey (Christchurch to Greymouth)
April 7th, 2012
The morning of April 7th marked the start of one of the most scenic and memorable parts of our New Zealand adventure: the TranzAlpine Train Journey. Departing from Christchurch at 8:45 AM, this train ride promised to be more than just a mode of transport—it was a breathtaking experience in itself.
The TranzAlpine Experience
The TranzAlpine train is nothing short of extraordinary. It has everything you could ask for—a well-equipped pantry car to grab snacks and drinks, comfortable seating, and, most importantly, panoramic windows that offer unobstructed views of the stunning landscapes.
For photographers and nature lovers like us, the real highlight was the open-air carriage. This special feature allowed us to step outside, feel the crisp mountain air, and capture the unparalleled beauty of the journey without any glass barriers. It was a perfect setup to immerse ourselves in the surroundings and take amazing photos along the way.
The Scenic Route
The train embarked on its 4.5-hour journey across the South Island, from Christchurch on the east coast to Greymouth on the west. The landscapes unfolded like a living painting, with every turn offering a new vista to admire. Here’s what we experienced along the way:
• Canterbury Plains: The journey began with rolling green farmlands, dotted with grazing sheep and rustic barns. This serene landscape gradually transitioned into the foothills of the Southern Alps.
• Waimakariri River Gorge: As we climbed into the mountains, the train crossed several bridges over the deep, turquoise waters of the Waimakariri River. The contrast between the rugged cliffs and the calm river below was mesmerizing.
• Arthur’s Pass: The train wound through Arthur’s Pass National Park, where towering peaks, misty valleys, and dense forests created an enchanting alpine atmosphere. This was undoubtedly one of the most picturesque parts of the journey.
• West Coast Rainforests: As we descended toward Greymouth, the landscape transformed into lush rainforests, with vibrant greenery and cascading waterfalls.
Capturing the Moment
The open-air carriage was a dream for photographers. The unobstructed views allowed us to take incredible shots of the passing scenery. Whether it was the sweeping plains, the glacial rivers, or the dramatic mountain peaks, every frame was worth capturing.
Below are some of the pictures I took during the journey. These photos barely do justice to the sheer beauty of what we saw, but they are memories I will cherish forever.

Arrival in Greymouth
By early afternoon, we arrived in Greymouth, a quaint town on New Zealand’s west coast. The train journey had already exceeded our expectations and left us eagerly anticipating what the rest of the trip would bring.
The TranzAlpine train journey was not just a way to travel from Christchurch to Greymouth—it was an experience that perfectly showcased the unmatched beauty of New Zealand’s South Island. If you ever get the chance, this is a journey you absolutely must take.
Day 3 & 4: From Fox Glacier to Queenstown – An Adventure-Packed Journey
April 7th – 8th, 2012
The Drive: Greymouth to Fox Glacier (April 7th)
The journey from Greymouth to Fox Glacier was nothing short of spectacular. Driving through this route felt like entering a painter’s masterpiece, with its untouched natural beauty and unique roadways.
The roads are narrow, with just one lane in each direction, blending seamlessly into the surroundings. Along the way, we crossed numerous one-way bridges, which are a signature feature of New Zealand’s South Island. These bridges, built over flowing streams, exist to preserve the natural environment, ensuring minimal disruption to the area’s pristine beauty.
There’s a simple rule for these one-way bridges: as you approach within 50 feet, blow your horn to signal your presence. If no one signals back, you can proceed. Once on the bridge, it’s customary to honk again to indicate you’re crossing. This quaint system added a touch of adventure to our drive and ensured everyone could share the road safely.
As we approached Fox Glacier, the anticipation of exploring this iconic natural wonder grew. We checked into The Fox Glacier Motel and Holiday Park, a cozy and welcoming spot surrounded by stunning views. After settling in, we spent the evening marveling at the beautiful landscapes and preparing for the next day’s adventure.

Fox Glacier Walk: A Morning of Adventure (April 8th)
The morning of April 8th began with an early breakfast, fueling us for what would be one of the highlights of our trip—a guided Glacier Walk on Fox Glacier. This activity had been booked months in advance, and we were buzzing with excitement.
The day started with a detailed safety briefing, during which we were equipped with essential gear: helmets, gloves, waterproof pants, wind jackets, and sturdy shoes. Once everyone in our group was ready, we boarded a bus that took us to the base of the glacier.
Standing at the foot of Fox Glacier was awe-inspiring. The massive ice formations, shimmering in shades of white and blue, seemed almost otherworldly. As we began our guided walk, we carefully navigated the icy terrain, marveling at the intricate patterns and formations carved by nature over thousands of years. Walking on the glacier felt like stepping into another world—a surreal and humbling experience that reminded us of the sheer power and beauty of nature.
After completing the walk, we returned to the base, exhilarated and grateful for the unforgettable experience.

The Drive to Queenstown
After a quick lunch, we hit the road again, this time heading toward Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world. The drive from Fox Glacier to Queenstown is a journey in itself, with breathtaking landscapes on both sides of the road.
We stopped several times along the way to admire and capture the stunning scenery. Snow-capped peaks, serene lakes, and dense forests lined the route, making every moment of the drive a visual treat. Each turn seemed to reveal a new, postcard-worthy view, and we couldn’t resist pulling over to take photos.

Arriving in Queenstown
By 9 PM, we arrived in Queenstown, a bustling hub for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. After checking into the Mercure International Hotel, we headed straight to the town center to grab dinner. Despite being late, Queenstown’s lively atmosphere greeted us warmly.
For dinner, we chose an Indian restaurant, craving the comfort of familiar flavors after a long day of adventure. The food was delicious, and the friendly atmosphere of the town center left us energized and excited for the days ahead.
Queenstown: A World of Adventure Awaits
Queenstown, often referred to as the adventure capital of the world, offers every kind of outdoor activity imaginable—from bungee jumping to skydiving, jet boating, and more. We couldn’t wait to explore everything this vibrant town had to offer.
Stay tuned as I recount our adventures in Queenstown and beyond, including the stunning Milford Sound and more incredible moments in New Zealand’s South Island!
Day 5: Milford Sound – A Journey to Nature’s Paradise
April 9th, 2012
Our final adventure in New Zealand took us to the iconic Milford Sound, often described as the “eighth wonder of the world.” This stunning fjord, nestled deep within Fiordland National Park, is a must-visit for anyone exploring New Zealand’s South Island. The journey to Milford Sound is just as incredible as the destination itself, and it was the perfect way to conclude our unforgettable trip.
The Journey to Milford Sound
Milford Sound is located approximately four hours from Queenstown, and we had planned ahead to make the most of the experience. Prior to our trip, we had booked a guided tour that included a bus ride from Queenstown to Milford Sound, ensuring we could enjoy the scenic drive without the stress of navigating the winding roads.
We started early, heading to Queenstown’s city center to catch the bus. The vehicle was specially designed for sightseeing, with large panoramic windows offering uninterrupted views of the breathtaking landscapes. The drive was nothing short of magical—lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, towering mountains, and mirror-like lakes surrounded us at every turn.
Our fellow travelers came from all corners of the world, creating a vibrant and diverse atmosphere on the bus. As we drove through Fiordland National Park, the anticipation in the air was palpable. The beauty of the journey itself made the four-hour drive fly by.

Milford Sound: Nature’s Masterpiece
Upon arriving at Milford Sound, we were greeted by a tranquil and awe-inspiring scene. Surrounded by sheer cliffs rising dramatically from the water and shrouded in mist, the fjord seemed like something out of a dream. It was quiet, peaceful, and impossibly beautiful—a true testament to the power and artistry of nature.
We embarked on a boat cruise to explore the fjord up close. The calm waters reflected the towering peaks, while waterfalls cascaded down the cliffs, some disappearing into the mist before reaching the surface. Along the way, we spotted seals lounging on rocks and playful dolphins swimming alongside the boat, adding a touch of magic to an already extraordinary experience.
The grandeur and serenity of Milford Sound left us speechless. It was one of those rare places where time seems to stand still, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty around you.

Back to Queenstown
After the cruise, we boarded the bus for the return journey to Queenstown. The drive back was just as mesmerizing, with the evening light casting a golden glow over the landscapes. We reached our hotel late in the evening, tired but deeply satisfied. It was a day filled with incredible sights and memories that would last a lifetime.
Day 6: Returning to Christchurch
The next morning, we began the long drive back to Christchurch, marking the end of our South Island adventure. As we drove through the familiar landscapes, we couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences we had over the past few days.
A Vacation to Remember
This trip to New Zealand’s South Island was more than just a vacation—it was a dream come true. From the serene beauty of Fox Glacier to the vibrant energy of Queenstown and the unparalleled majesty of Milford Sound, every moment was unforgettable.
As we boarded our flight back to Sydney, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a magical place. New Zealand had lived up to and exceeded all my expectations, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart.
If you’re a nature lover or someone seeking the trip of a lifetime, New Zealand is the place to be. I know I’ll be back someday to explore even more of this beautiful country.
